What the tracking record shows
4,887 of 7,100 eligible tracked tokens (68.8%) have an explicit market-retirement state. 1,793 remain active in the catalog and 420 have unresolved lifecycle or identity records.
This is a retirement share within DexBrief’s coverage, not the failure rate of all crypto launches. An active catalog state is not a fresh verification of trading. Noindex alone is never counted as retirement.

The Token Graveyard
This study compares catalog cohorts, including markets that remained active. The archive preserves individual retirement decisions and subsequent observations. A market found trading again stays visible in its report; its original retirement does not establish token death.

Methodology and limitations
- Population: catalog entries first tracked at least 30 days ago. First tracked is not the launch date.
- Established ranked assets are excluded (1,198); any positive recorded market-cap rank triggers exclusion. Unranked does not prove a token was newly launched.
- Exact identities are counted once (0 duplicate entries excluded). Missing identities remain unresolved.
- Retired means an explicit retired_no_market or retired_low_activity state. Missing identity, stale observations, noindex and provider errors alone do not qualify.
- The denominator contains retired, active and unresolved rows. Retired / tracked does not silently classify unresolved records as survivors. Downloadable rows retain follow-up status separately from the original catalog state.
- Coverage is not a random sample. DexBrief uses changing discovery, liquidity and activity gates. Older cohorts were admitted under stricter gates and can look healthier for that reason. These age groups are not a survival curve.
- Provider coverage gaps, unsupported networks, migrations and resumed trading can affect retirement decisions. The report library preserves follow-ups instead of treating a retirement as irreversible death.
- Small table groups are suppressed: fewer than 40 entries by age/month, fewer than 60 by chain. All eligible rows remain in downloads.
- Version 2 corrects the earlier use of noindex/stale strikes as death indicators. It is not directly comparable with older published mortality percentages.
